Christmas Caroling - Is it A Lost Tradition

As I was watching a Hallmark Channel movie the other evening, I was watching the small town feel that I think we have lost in America. The town was decorated with lights and trees and a small festival took place in the center of town for people to walk around, play games, and people were caroling. I began to think - Do people do caroling anymore?

I know no one would dress in the fancy gear that it shows on these shows, but just to go sing in front of someone's home for the homeowner to enjoy the music of the season. Are there towns that still have carolers singing at their winter festivities, if there are any of them? Do random people get together and go sing for anyone these days? Or has caroling became a tradition that has just as well been lost!

I do believe a few churches here still send visitors to the nursing homes to sing for the residents and that is nice, but with the prospect of singing in the outdoors in front of homes, businesses, etc. I am not sure that it is done. Have we became a society that doesn't listen to Christmas carols? Do children know the Christmas stories like Rudolph, Frosty, The Little Drummer Boy, and some of the other classics?

I truly believe that our society is heading into a downward spiral that it may not come out of. I feel that once we take away all that our society was based off of and take away the traditions that we have had for years, we may never return the to the society that cares for others. It is sad that so many simple joys have been taken from children and adults.

Are there Christmas festivals in your hometown? Do people still go caroling near you? Name one of your favorite Christmas traditions?

  1. I agree and want the old feeling back🎄. We have festivals but no caroling in years. I can’t sing. I love to try and sing at Church really loud:). Thanks for sharing this. Hugs

    1. Yes, it is sad to see the younger generation have no traditions.

  2. Our Church goes caroling the Sunday evening before Christmas every year. We then go back to the Social Hall for Hot Chocolate and cookies to get warmed up. It is really fun and I would miss it if we didn't go any longer!

  3. They filmed a Hallmark movie in our town last year and that sure gussied up the place. But they took it all away and things were drab for the rest of the festive season. When I moved here 40 years ago, downtown was a showplace. The power company strung fancy light displays across the main street and the trees all had colored lights. Shops broadcast music out into the street. All gone...

    1. Sad that all of those things are gone. Do you know what movie was filmed there?

  4. I do miss caroling parties -- I used to do that with a group of music and theatre majors and it sounded like the Andy Williams Christmas specials of old! Four part harmony and everyone knew the words without looking. Our Silver Bells parade was last night -- I usually give it a miss; too many people, but it's nice for those who attend. I'll probably head to a smaller fest in our older part of town for Festivus. And of course the Festival of Trees, always a must. We have too many Christmas traditions to count!

  5. Well, how very nice that you live in an area that does that many things. I would love to live some place like that.
