Hard Day at The Farm

Anyone that raises farm animals for food will tell you that the day the animal goes to the butcher is a hard day or they should. Knowing that today is the last day that this beautiful God created creature will be on the Earth is a sad day, but we are also fully aware that each day we spend with them this day is coming.

Today is the day for this cow. She was Momma to our twin calves last year and I have spent some time with her, but she has become aggressive towards anyone that gets near her pasture and so we made the decision that she will be the one to go to the butcher. We had a different one that we intended to send that we have not had at home and spent much time with, but changed our minds. She actually charged at the fence last week while my granddoll and husband were there to give her a few flakes of hay until the round bail could be put into her pasture.

She seems to dislike the grand doll quite a bit and has charged towards the fence a few times with her out there, so for her safety and my peace of mind "momma cow" will be dinner on the table within a few weeks. I know many people can't think of them like that but as a farm family you learn that it is a part of life.

We are under a winter storm warning for the weekend and I dread that but I am sure it will give me some beautiful pictures! I have some things to do today to prepare for the snow. I am hoping the grand doll will help me get a few things done around here.

Until we meet again, may your trail be blessed and your ride be smooth!!

  1. I was raised on "country sunshine" and what we ate came from our farm, eggs, veggies, milk and yes MEAT. I totally understand and hope you enjoy the fresh meat on the table. Have a blessed and beautiful WINTRY weekend! HUGS!

  2. I understand how hard it can be to say good bye to a farm animal. Sounds like you made a wise decision with this one though.

    Blessings~

  3. It is all just part of living on a farm where you feel that farm raised food is better.

  4. Sometimes you just have to do the hard things. Dean and Sherry sold their favorite goat named Buddy a couple of years ago when he got so strong he even bloodied up Dean. Since Louis Dean and I were going to be doing critter chores from time to time, they decided not to take a chance on one of us being injured by him.
