Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in 10 minutes or less. I decided that I really did not know the exact signs of frostbite so I looked them up and here is what I found.
- Cold, numb, and pale skin
- Pins and needles
- Sensation to touch is decreased
- Burning skin sensation
- Stinging sensation
- Skin discoloration: skin turns red, white, blue or grayish- yellow
Plus, I learned that frostbite can occur in those with poor circulation a lot quicker than those that are healthier. Frostbite is not a common issue that medical personnel see, but it does become a factor when temperatures are hitting below zero and staying there along with wind chills of 20-40 below zero.
Tips for preventing this is making sure you stay warm and make sure any skin is covered! I was just thinking today that I will be making sure we have some scarves and extra gloves for when we are out.
Farming brings its own challenges at this time of the year and with the temperatures that we are going to have, it is going to be a little more difficult to feed and take care of them. Luckily, they all have dry houses to get into and hopefully, the warm bedding will aid in keeping them healthy. I worry about the calves the most, but since they are older I believe that they will be okay. They are locked in the barn and won't be out.
Please check on elderly neighbors or anyone who lives alone during this cold spell and make sure they are safe. If you have neighbors who might need some help during this time, offer it. Bundle up and stay warm.
Until we meet again, may your trail be blessed and your ride be smooth!
