Happy Birthday Elvis

Sept. 9, 1956, this young man set the world on fire with his appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Gyrating hips and moves that were deemed too sexual in nature for many people, but his voice and his determination set him on the track to become the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis Presley, a young man born in Tupelo, Mississippi was like nothing anyone had seen in the music business.

Today, Elvis would be 91 years old today. That is hard to imagine just how life would be for him if he was still alive. However, on August 16,1977 the world stopped as news of his death at home soared across the world. Mourners quickly gathered at the gates of Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee to celebrate his life and career. How could Elvis be dead?

Born to Gladys and Vernon Presley in 1935, along with a twin brother that was still born at birth, he grew a special bond with his parents, but especially his mother. Attending an Assembly of God church as a child was the inspiration of where his musical roots began. His parents were poor and often relied on government assistance as well as family for help. Vernon lost their home due to going to jail for writing a bad check.

Gladys found a way to buy Elvis a guitar, and I guess you could say the rest is history. Elvis was a very shy young man, and even after he had many number one hits, he still struggled with stage fright at every performance.

Elvis loved being an actor though and that was where he wanted his career to be. He also wanted to do overseas tours, but Colonel Tom Parker, his manager, never allowed that to happen.

Many fans believe that Colonel Parker led to the destruction and ultimate death of Elvis. He would find doctors that would keep Elvis with an endless supply of drugs to keep him performing and help him to sleep. Elvis had serious health issues the last few years of his life that if treated, he might be alive today.

However, even with him gone, Elvis is to be celebrated today on what would be his 91st birthday.
