Book Review - Becoming by Michelle Obama
I found this book by accident as I was looking for something else but decided that I would go ahead and read it. I found her story to be quite fascinating and one that brings a new look to life in the White House as a mother and wife.
Excellent read! I learned so much from this book about who Michelle Obama was and currently is. I learned of her struggle of wondering if her children could live a normal childhood under the rules of being daughters of the President, the struggles of being First Lady, and leading a life of her own following the Presidency.
I learned many things about the White House that I did not know and learned of many ways that the White House is operated that I was not aware of as well. The history of some of the White House is amazing. Some of it is rather odd.Being the first black family brought about changes as well to the history of the United States, but many of the requests she made of the staff were much more just a mother allowing her children to be just that, children. Staffers were asked not to make the children's beds as they were expected to do it themselves. That is Mom being Mom!
Many aspects of living in the White House are not as much fun as it seems that it would be. Late night meetings that take the time of the President away from his family, never being allowed to open a window on your home, never being able to go anywhere without notifying someone and having a detail of security follow you. Never being truly alone!
A date night has to be arranged and many details that no one would expect for a simple night out with your spouse. A kids birthday party where all guests must be investigated. A trip outside must be okayed by someone. Sounds more like a prison that the most regarded establishment in the USA to me.
Mrs. Obama made many great contributions to the White House and will be remembered for years to come, but her time there did bring both joy and loneliness and a sense of fear for her children to be as normal as possible.
