Canning 101

Do you can? I was never raised around anyone except my granny that canned and really had no interest in it until a couple of years ago. Now I am wanting to learn as much as I can and plan to follow some sites on Facebook that are doing a Canuary 2026 event where they will be sharing many different foods that can be canned.

Ashton Peek has offered some amazing products that will be helpful with this project that I want to share with you in case anyone else is interested.

A calendar to follow along with what is happening in your group. Calendar

A grocery list for her site that will allow you to shop early. Grocery List

A recipe card that you can add your favorites too. Recipe card

I don't think I will use her grocery list as I think that I am going with another site for my instructional videos, but I will use the cards and the calendar.

I will be following The Homemade Mess. I have watched several of her videos and really seem to like the way that she explains all that she is doing. She will do water bathing and pressure canning. I have not water bathed much and I am looking for a new canner, so I will just be taking notes and using her ideas at a later time, but I will be looking to have much more canned by the end of the year. We seem to waste a lot of food, and I am setting 2026 as a no waste year for us.

She also posts several recipes that I am planning to try as soon as I feel up to it again. Here is one for many of you to enjoy. It is for Gooey Caramel Rolls. She makes these on Christmas morning.

If you are a mom that cares what her kids eat, I would highly suggest that you take an interest in canning. I have found that many of the issues that kids seem to have these days seem to be linked to the many dyes and additives found in our foods. I believe that cancer is linked to our food as well. Have you ever looked at what your kids eat? Have you ever looked at the amount of sodium in a store bought can of soup? UGH! It makes my blood boil to think that the FDA has allowed companies to feed us these kinds of foods for years. I will be learning to can homemade spaghetti o's with her, and I believe my grands will thank me for that.

She will be showing how to can meats, dairy, etc. You don't have to love homemaking to want to provide healthier foods for your family. I hope some of you will join me on my quest to learn more and maybe get an older grandchild to join with you as well. My oldest daughter is joining me as she prepares many foods already in such a way.
