Top 10 Christmas Movies
Now that Thanksgiving is over and the Christmas season is officially upon us, I decided it was a good time to post this article that I have thought about writing for a few years now. Hallmark Channel has seemed to capitalize on the love for Christmas romance stories, but there are some Christmas movies that still stand out as the best of the best.
* It's A Wonderful Life - Released in 1946
A fantasy drama about George Bailey, a man who sacrifices his time for others and never realizes his worth until an angel appears and he sees just how worthy his life has been to others.
* A Christmas Story - Released in 1983
A holiday comedy that follows the story of young Ralphie Parker's search for his idea of the perfect Christmas gift. The story seems to be told by his adult self and how he remembers that Christmas.
A beloved family comedy about Kevin McCallister, an 8-year-old little boy that accidentally gets left at home alone when his family leaves on a Christmas vacation. First thrilled that he is alone, he suddenly finds that he has to fight off would be burglars.
* Elf - Released in 2003
A modern comedy about Buddy, a human raised by elves, traveling to New York City in a search for his father. His boundless supply of holiday cheer makes for great humor and a good storyline all in one.
A comedy- drama about a department store Santa who insists that he is the real Kris Kringle and inspires belief in a single mom and her daughter.
* National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Released in 1989
A holiday comedy about the Griswold's family Christmas. As with most things that Clark Griswold does, planning a Christmas filled with family turns into a complete and hilarious disaster.
An animated Christmas television special that follows the Peanuts cartoon characters as they find the real meaning of the season. This was the first comic strip to be made into a television special.
* How The Grinch Stole Christmas - Released in 1966
Another animated Christmas television special that makes the list. This story follows the Grinch, a miserably unhappy and bitter character that does not like the families in Whoville and is determined to ruin their Christmas but discovers that the real meaning of Christmas has nothing to do with material things.
A heart-warming Christmas musical that features the Muppets recreating the story of Scrooge.
* White Christmas - Released in 1954
A Technicolor musical that includes humor and romance involving two entertainers as they team up with a pair of sisters to help their former Army commander saves his Vermont Inn. A heart-warming story and a reminder that many military members find themselves lost without those "jobs".
Those are the 10 all-time favorite movies, but I have another to share that some do not consider a Christmas movie but is played here locally every Christmas and is highly debated on. The entire movie takes place at a Christmas Eve party, but it is also laced with action and adventure. Is it a Christmas movie?
* Die Hard - Released in 1988
Featuring Brice Willis playing a New York police detective who visits his estranged wife to reconcile with her but finds himself in the midst of chaos when her office skyscraper is seized by a group of criminals during a Christmas Eve party. An action thriller is not the normal genre for a Christmas movie, but I would say that they hit the mark with this one.
Are any of these your favorite movie to watch? I like many of them but How the Grinch Stole Christmas and White Christmas are my two favorites. If you haven't seen any of these, be sure to search and see if it is possible to stream them or find another way to watch as you won't be disappointed.
